Allen Russell "Russ" Rhymer, born on May 4, 1955, in Henderson County, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in Asheville, leaving behind a legacy of joy and humor. Throughout his life, Russ embraced the role of an Activities Director in various rest homes across the Asheville area, where he cultivated many meaningful friendships. His unwavering commitment to uplifting the spirits of those around him made him a beloved figure in the community.
Known for his cleverness and infectious humor, Russ had an exceptional ability to bring smiles and laughter to people's faces. His upbeat demeanor and witty sarcasm endeared him to everyone he met, making him a source of light and laughter in both personal and professional settings.
Russ shared a profound partnership with his husband, Marvin Bruce Mashburn. Their love story began in 1975, culminating in a historic marriage on October 10, 2014, when they became the first same-sex couple to wed in Buncombe County following the change in marriage laws. Their bond was a testament to love and resilience, inspiring many with their commitment to each other.
He is survived by his husband, Marvin; his godson, Father Christopher Cole, and his wife Alex; his sisters, Betty Frisbee and her husband Jerry "Frizz," and Patsy Gilliam and her husband Larry Dalton; as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Browlow Rhymer and Gertrude Clayton Rhymer, and his sister, Judy Sutton, and her husband Ben. Their memories, along with Russ' vibrant spirit and the lives he touched, will remain forever cherished.
A memorial service to celebrate Russ' life will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at St. James Episcopal Church, 766 N Main St, Hendersonville, NC 28792, with his godson, Father Christopher Cole officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Russ' memory to St. James Episcopal Church, 766 N Main St, Hendersonville, NC 28792.
