Betty Wallen Hendrix, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the age of 91 in Asheville. Born on August 22, 1934, in Woodfin, Betty dedicated her life to her family, her work, and her faith.
Betty’s educational journey began with her graduation from Emma High School in 1952, followed by her completion of studies at Blantons Business College in 1954. She then embarked on a career that reflected her strong work ethic, serving for many years with the Teamsters Union and later in the Jewelry Department at Wal-Mart.
A longtime member of Westwood Baptist Church and West Asheville Baptist Church, Betty found community and strength in her faith. Her contributions to fostering children were a testament to her nurturing spirit, and her love for animals was well known to those around her.
She spent 86 years calling Brickyard Road her home, where she created lasting memories with family and friends. Betty leaves a legacy that includes her sons, Walter Hendrix and his wife Vickie, Samuel Hendrix, and Eddie Chester; along with her cherished great-granddaughter, Betty Jo Hendrix. She is also survived by her brother, John David "JD" Wallen; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will miss her dearly.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John Nathaniel Wallen and Treva Hollifield Wallen; her husband, John Edward Hendrix; her son, Rodney Hendrix; her sister-in-law, Marilyn Wallen; and siblings: Clyde Wallen and his wife Elfriede, Earl Wallen and his wife Alice, Ruth Ann Bell and her husband Lonnie, and Mary Frances Russell and her husband Aaron.
A private service will be held at a later date at Green Hills Cemetery.
Her memory will forever be cherished, and her impact on the lives she touched will continue to resonate within the community.
