Betty Sams Muse

Betty Jean Sams Muse, born on December 16, 1949, in Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in her hometown on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Throughout her life, Betty was remembered as a strong and loving lady who dedicated herself to helping others. Her nurturing spirit extended to all aspects of her life, whether through her work in the medical field or her irreplaceable companionship to her beloved pets, Doodles and Isabel.

Betty’s passion for music was a significant part of her identity, bringing joy not only to herself but also to those around her. She had an infectious energy and a warm smile that welcomed anyone who needed support. Betty was a cherished mother and sister, and her legacy will continue to live on through her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Shook; son-in-law, Allen Surrett; brother-in-law, Lance B. Moss; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever hold her memory in their hearts.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Josiah Sams and Sadie Elizabeth Ellison Sams; her daughter, Debra Shook; her son, James Shook, Jr.; and her sisters: Sadie Alberta Moss, Pauline Sams, Elizabeth "Louise" Owens, Thelma Irene Sams, Joann Whitson, and Georgia Lunsford.

In honoring her life, a funeral service to celebrate her life will be announced, with burial to follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James White, Joe White, Dago, Bruce, Tyler, and Steven. 

Betty Jean Sams Muse will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
