Betty Brown Runion

Betty Brown Runion passed away peacefully at the Solace Center in Asheville on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Born on February 27, 1929, in Leicester, Betty’s life was marked by kindness, generosity, and an unwavering dedication to her family, her faith, and her community.

Betty was the daughter of Charlie Joseph Brown and Mamie Etta Rhymer Brown. She spent her early years in West Buncombe, nurturing the values and deep-rooted connections that would stay with her throughout her life. On August 14, 1948, she married the love of her life, Leroy Runion. Their partnership was a foundation for their family until Leroy’s passing on September 24, 1977. Together, they raised children and created a home filled with warmth and togetherness.

Her professional life, too, was a model of commitment and steadfastness. Betty worked for Roses (Sky City) for many years, only retiring at the remarkable age of 87. Her dedication to her work and her colleagues was as evident as her devotion to her family.

A woman of faith, Betty was a longtime member of Victory Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School class for many years. She inspired others not only with her words but with her example, fostering a spirit of unity and caring among all who knew her. Known for her special tradition, Betty always carried Cow Tails candy, delighting in giving them as a token of appreciation to anyone who lent her a helping hand—a gesture that endeared her to many and created fond memories for those who stayed close, hoping for a sweet treat and an even sweeter smile.

Betty also cherished her time at the Care Partners PACE program, where she formed new friendships and enjoyed the fellowship of others in her later years.

Betty’s commitment to her family was ever-present. She is survived by her loving children: Jan Payne and husband Tom, and Tim Runion and wife Lynn; and daughter-in-law, Tara Lynn Runion. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Kelly Prestwood, Nick Runion and wife Megan, Amber Runion Hallenborg and husband Jonathan, and Ashley Runion. Betty was a proud great-grandmother to Luci Mae, Elliot, Caleb, Lyla, Bowen, and Shepherd; and a great-great-grandmother to Zaeda. She is also survived by her sister, Peggy McSwain, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family, whose devotion and affection meant so much to her.

Betty faced the heartbreak of loss with remarkable strength and grace, remembering always her loved ones who preceded her in death: her husband Leroy, her parents, her sons: Gary and Philip Runion, and her precious great-granddaughter Emma.

Her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched will remember Betty Brown Runion for her generosity, wisdom, gentle humor, and enduring love. She leaves behind a rich legacy borne of a life well-lived—a testament to her strength of character and her boundless capacity for love.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Though Betty is no longer with us, the memory of her kindness and strength will continue to inspire and comfort all who were privileged to know her.
