David Michael Sams

David Michael Sams, of Leicester, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Asheville at the age of 68. He was born on June 9, 1958, in Asheville and was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County.

David graduated from Erwin High School class of 1976. He went on to serve his community through his work at the Leicester Post Office for 30 years, and he was also a lifelong farmer. His steady work ethic and commitment to those around him reflected a life rooted in faith, family, and community.

A longtime member of Leicester Baptist Church, David was always quick to volunteer and help meet the needs of the church. He loved his family deeply and was a devoted and loving husband, daddy, and grandfather. His grandchildren were the light of his life. He enjoyed spending time at Lake James with his family where he also enjoyed riding his golf cart. David enjoyed sharing life with his many friends, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

David is survived by his wife, Debbie Banks Sams, his beloved wife of 49 years. He is also survived by his son, Chance Sams and wife Crystal, along with their children: Kailey, Brantley, and Tenley. He is further survived by his his brother, Charles Sams and wife Caroleen; sister, Audrey Turbyfill and husband Kirt; nephews: Anthony Turbyfill and wife Kelley, and Chad Turbyfill and wife Miranda; nieces: Tonja Hall and husband Jeff, and Shelatha Smith; and by many extended family and friends. Each of them held a special place in his life, and his love for his family was evident in all he did.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Riley Russell Sams and Vergie Lodusky Sharpe Sams.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a graveside service to honor David's life on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Leicester Baptist Church Cemetery, 18 Tony Lunsford Dr, Leicester, NC 28748. Pastor Chad Ellege will officiate.

David will be remembered for his faithful heart, his willingness to serve, and the deep love he gave to his family and friends. His memory will remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
