Dawn Rae McDonough, passed away on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Born on July 29, 1937, in Franconia, New Hampshire, she raised her family in Poughkeepsie, New York and Trussville, Alabama. Dawn and her husband, Frank, spent their retirement at the beach in Destin, Florida before coming to the mountains of North Carolina a couple of years ago.
Dawn was deeply committed to her family, which was evident in the love and care she poured into her home. Her passion for quilting, sewing, and embroidery showcased her creativity and dedication, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful handmade items that will be cherished by her loved ones.
Dawn shared a fulfilling marriage of 63 years with her late husband, Francis "Frank" David McDonough, who predeceased her on July 29, 2025. Together, they built a life filled with love and memories since their wedding in 1961. Dawn’s family will remember her not only for her artistic talents but also for her humor and kindness. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Grace Lepha Elvira Wood Kelley; and sister, Beth Lane.
She is survived by her five sons: Kevin McDonough and his husband Robert Clyman, Jeff McDonough, Michael McDonough and wife Misty, Timothy McDonough, and Brian McDonough and partner Renee Rogers. Dawn cherished her role as a mother and took great pride in her children’s lives.
Dawn treasured her grandchildren, including Josh, Samantha, Genie, Kelli and husband Josh, Patrick and wife Lindy, Leah, Samuel, and Meghan. As a loving grandmother, she celebrated their achievements and milestones, creating lasting memories that will resonate through generations.
Additionally, Dawn was blessed with three great-grandchildren: Shae, Ava, and Delaney, who brought her immense joy. Her spirit will continue to shine through each of them.
Dawn is also remembered by her cousins: Patricia Hoar, Kelley Richter, Christine Porter, and Joseph Liberty who shared fond memories of their time together.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
As her family reflects on her life, they will forever hold dear the love and legacy Dawn Rae McDonough leaves behind. She will be missed dearly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
