Asheville

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas "Dean" Arrowood, who left us on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in his hometown of Asheville. Born on August 31, 1969, Dean was a man deeply rooted in the fabric of his community and family, whose life was marked by dedication, resilience, and an enduring curiosity about the world around him.

Dean devoted much of his professional life to the family business, specializing in construction and remodeling. His work was a reflection of his commitment to craftsmanship and community, building not only structures but also lasting relationships with those he worked alongside.

A man of many interests, Dean found joy and solace in hiking, immersing himself in music, and contemplating the complexities of the human condition. His intellectual pursuits were complemented by his active involvement in fraternal organizations. Dean was a proud member of the Nicholas-West Asheville Masonic Lodge #650 AF&AM and reached the esteemed 32nd degree in the Scottish Rite, embodying the principles of integrity and fellowship that these organizations champion.

In 2023, Dean faced the formidable challenge of a cancer diagnosis. His initial fight was met with remarkable courage and hope, achieving remission through chemotherapy in 2024, a testament to his indomitable spirit. Unfortunately, the illness returned more aggressively in late 2025, leading to a series of extended hospital stays in 2026. Returning to his family home during this difficult time, Dean remained surrounded by love and support until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his baby sister, Carmen Anita Arrowood; his beloved nephew, Daniel Stone Arrowood; his maternal grandparents, Andy and Merie Chavez; his paternal grandparents, CW and Sarah Arrowood; and uncles on both sides of his family.

Dean’s memory is lovingly cherished by his parents, Douglas H. Arrowood and Carmen Marie Arrowood; his sister, Michaelle Arrowood Norton, and her husband Ervin; his brother, Daniel Lee Arrowood; as well as by twelve nieces and nephews, along with great nieces and nephews who brought joy to his life. Additionally, his lifelong friend, Lon Thompson, stood as a steadfast presence through the years.

Honoring Dean’s wishes, there will be no funeral service at this time. Instead, friends and family plan to gather for a memorial celebration of his life at a future date, providing a space to reflect on and celebrate the legacy of a man who touched so many lives with his kindness, wisdom, and passion.

Douglas "Dean" Arrowood will be remembered not only for his professional dedication and personal interests but most of all for the warmth and strength he brought to his family and community. His presence will be deeply missed, and his spirit will remain a guiding light for those who knew and loved him.

Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation Center is honored to serve Dean's family.
