Elizabeth Cordle Young

Asheville

Elizabeth Cordle Young of Asheville, NC, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026. Born October 13, 1934 in Asheville, NC to Herbert and Bridie Cordle, she was a devoted mother and wife, and gifted musician. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband John Logan Young, and sister Georgia Cordle Cook.

Elizabeth made the selfless decision to devote herself to raising her children, giving generously of her time, energy and talents. She valued education, working tirelessly to ensure her children grew up surrounded by knowledge and culture. Reading classic literature and poetry, attending various concerts and plays, and taking frequent trips to the library, she nurtured in them a deep appreciation for culture and the arts.

An avid reader throughout her life, she was rarely without a book-often reading two or three in tandem. Her mornings were reserved for books that she could learn from, and her evening reading was purely for entertainment. Her intellectual curiosity, remarkable memory, and sharp wit were constants, delighting those around her. She especially loved watching “Jeopardy!” each evening, often answering questions with ease when others could not.

Music was her lifelong passion. A talented pianist, she graduated from Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, and continued to play nearly until her final days. Her home was always filled with music – either from a record on the turntable, piano lessons, or one of the various instruments in the home.

She also found joy in life’s quieter moments. She loved watching college basketball and tennis, going for walks and long drives with her husband John to watch the birds fly in over the river. They would always come home with a bird count.

Above all, she cherished her family. She took immense pride in her granddaughters, Sarah and Mary Kate, delighting in their musical talents and the continuation of a passion she held so dear.

Elizabeth leaves behind daughter Emily Young Foley (Mark), son Bill Young (Malu), and Holly Young Frisbie (Will), and two granddaughters, Sarah and Mary Kate Frisbie, as well as sisters-in-law Margie Young Eagan, Joan Young, and Dee Young, and many nieces and nephews.

Her life was one of generosity, intellect and enduring love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives she so profoundly shaped.
