Gary Lee Stamey passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 14, 2026, in his hometown of Asheville. Born on December 10, 1949, Gary’s life was marked by commitment, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to public service.
A lifelong resident of Asheville, Gary graduated from Lee Edwards High School and went on to build a distinguished career as a Building Inspector for the City of Asheville. Over the span of more than 30 years, he diligently ensured the safety and integrity of countless structures throughout the city, contributing to the well-being and growth of the community he deeply loved. His expertise and conscientious approach earned him the respect of colleagues, builders, and residents alike, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s development.
Gary’s devotion to his work was matched by his loyalty to his family. He is survived by his sister, Louise Murdock; his brothers: William M. “Bill” Stamey, III and wife Debbie, and Jerry R. Stamey and wife Beth; as well as several nieces and nephews who cherish his memory and the bond they shared.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William McKinley Stamey, Jr. and Myrtle Lee Laughter Stamey; his sister, Sondra Stamey; and his brother-in-law, John Murdock.
A memoria service to celebrate Gary's life will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, in the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home. His family will receive friends from 10 until 10:45 AM at the funeral home on Wednesday before the service. A private burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
As we honor his life, may we hold close the example he set and the quiet dignity with which he led his days. Gary will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
