Gene Thomas Capps

Gene Thomas Capps, a beloved member of the Buncombe County community, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville, at the age of 98.

Born on March 23, 1928, in Buncombe County, Gene lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and a steadfast commitment to his work and faith. A proud native of Buncombe County for the majority of his life, he cherished his roots and maintained deep connections to both his birthplace and its people.

Gene was a graduate of West Buncombe High School, earning his diploma in 1945. Soon after, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Army Air Corps during the final years of World War II, demonstrating the same dedication and responsibility that would define the rest of his life.

After his military service, Gene found his vocation with the United States Postal Service, where he served as a Rural Letter Carrier for an impressive 35 years until his retirement. His many years ensuring the mail reached every corner of his community reflected his sense of duty and reliability. Upon retiring, Gene relocated to Winter Park, Florida, where they resided for 35 years before he returned once more to Western North Carolina.

A man of deep faith, Gene was a longtime former member of Macedonia Baptist Church and, in later years, a devoted member of Liberty Baptist Church in Candler. His commitment to his church families was integral to his life, guiding his actions and giving comfort and purpose throughout his years.

Gene was blessed with a large and loving family who survive him and will cherish his memory. He is survived by his sons: Steve Capps and wife Adriana, Dana Capps and wife Lizeth, and Phillip Capps; and his sister, Jeannette Byrd. Gene's extended family includes four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, nieces, and nephews, all of whom carry forth his legacy of kindness and steadfastness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Capps; his parents, Roy Rastus Capps and Mae Thelma Buckner Capps; his daughter, Vicki Cooper; his son-in-law, Ken Cooper; his brothers: Bruce Capps, Gerald Capps, Michael Capps, Roger Capps, and Ray Capps; and his sister, June Spivey.

Those wishing to honor Gene’s life are invited to attend a graveside service, which will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at Green Hills Cemetery at 25 New Leicester Highway, Asheville, NC 28806. Rev. Derrick McCarson will officiate. This gathering will be an opportunity for family, friends, and the community to reflect on an extraordinary life, one that touched so many with warmth, diligence, and unwavering principles.

Gene Thomas Capps will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to know him, but his legacy will endure in the hearts of those he loved, served, and inspired.
