Geneva Shelton McDowell

April 2, 1929 — January 18, 2026

Leicester

Geneva Shelton McDowell, born on April 2, 1929, in Pickens, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home in Leicester, North Carolina, on Sunday, January 18, 2026. A cherished wife, mother and grandmother, and beloved by her family, Geneva's life was marked by her devotion to those she loved and her unwavering faith.

Geneva spent most of her formative years in Waynesville before making her home in Buncombe County following her marriage in 1952. As a dedicated homemaker, she poured her heart into caring for her husband, Roy McDowell, and nurturing her children and grandchildren. Geneva’s love extended beyond her immediate family; she was known for her warmth and kindness, fostering close relationships with many in her extended family.

For 25 years, Geneva contributed to the Woodfin School as a lunchroom lady, where she served not only meals but also smiles and encouragement to countless children. Her work resonated with her passion for nurturing, a trait that defined both her personal and professional lives.

Geneva was a longtime member of Newfound Baptist Church, where she spent more than 40 years actively participating in the choir. Music was one of her many joys, and her contributions to the church enriched the lives of those around her. Outside of her commitments, she relished in walking, spending quality time with her family, and preparing Sunday lunches that brought everyone together.

Geneva is survived by her daughters, Gwen Lusk and her husband Gary, and Donna Bowman and husband Dick; her grandchildren: Chris Lusk and his wife Katie, Roy Lusk and his wife Brooke, and Jeremy Bowman and his wife Tonya; and her great-grandchildren: Nolan Lusk and his wife Ann, Molly Lusk, Landree Lusk, Harper Lusk, Grady Lusk, Riley Bowman, and Grayson Bowman. She is also survived by her sister, Wilma Drew; her brother, James Messer and his wife Marie; her special nephew, Ronald Shelton; beloved caregiver, Laura Turner who was a very special person in Geneva's life; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She joins in eternal rest her beloved husband, Roy McDowell; her parents, Mitch and Pauline Browning Shelton; and her siblings: sisters Marie Mahfet, Louise Stokes, Nancy Mathis Griffin, Olene Rhymer, Joanne Stewart, and Margare Rhinehart; and brothers Virgil Shelton, Berlin Shelton, Ronnie Shelton, and Zeb Shelton.

A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 12 PM on Friday, January 23, 2026, at Newfound Baptist Church, 2605 New Leicester Hwy, Leicester, NC 28748. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 AM until 11:45 AM on Friday at the church.

Geneva Shelton McDowell will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, faith, and generosity will remain in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
