West Asheville - George Washington Bates, Jr., 80 of 164 School Road, Malvern Hills, died Sunday, December 23, 2001 at Park Ridge Hospital. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He was a retired self employed painting contractor, member of Mt. Pisgah Academy Seventh Day Adventist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of W W II. Mr. Bates was a son of the late George Washington Bates, Sr. and Lona Baker Bates Thompson and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ann Zalabak formerly of Fletcher. Surviving are his wife Marie Bates whom they married June 13, 1942; son, George Allen Bates and wife, Cristina of Asheville; daughters, Yvonne Marie Fowler and husband, Murel of Apex, Annice June Bates and Janice Sue Bates both of Candler; sister, Ruth Darnell of San Diego, Ca.; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Pastor David Dobias and Mr. Bates son-in-law, Mr. W.D. Zalabak officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Candler with grandsons serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
