Hal Epps West, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Clyde, North Carolina, on December 11, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on October 9, 1943, in Asheville, North Carolina, Hal lived a life defined by his love for family, his passion for music, and his dedication to his work.
Hal and his wife, Ruth, moved to Tennessee in 1972 and then later in 1978 moved to Georgia where he established himself and raised his family for many years. In early 2025, he retruned home to the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.
Hal had a remarkable career that began in sales with American Enka and Rohm & Haas before he ventured into the carpet manufacturing industry, establishing himself in Dalton, Georgia. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of his professional life, earning him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike.
A proud graduate of Western Carolina University, he held a business degree that served as a foundation for his successful career. He was known for his giving and caring nature, traits that he carried into every aspect of his life.
Beyond his career, Hal was a passionate musician. He loved playing the bass guitar and had a rich musical history that included performing with the Bill Norwood Trio at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. Music was more than a hobby for Hal; it was an integral part of his identity, bringing joy to both himself and those who had the pleasure of listening to him play.
Hal was an active member of the community, proudly serving as a Freemason in Dalton, Georgia, and a longtime member of Holly Creek Baptist Church in Chatsworth, Georgia. His involvement in these organizations reflected his commitment to service and faith.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Ruth Burrows West; his son, Michael Troy West and wife Ladusta of Bremerton, Washington; his cherished grandson, Ryan West; his brother, Jackie West and wife Susan; his niece, Angela Ellis Brown and husband Stephen; and many extended family members who will remember him fondly.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Hal Epps West, Sr. and Easter Delma Stines West; his sons, Gregory Hal West and William Reed West; and his sister, Miriam Smith and husband Carl.
Hal Epps West, Jr. will be remembered for his warmth, his incredible talent, and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those around him. His legacy of love, strength, and musical passion will continue to resonate within his family and community.
