Howard Glenn Gantt, a devoted family man and cherished member of his community, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, in Morganton. Born on December 1, 1931, in Buncombe County, Howard lived a life marked by dedication, faith, and a deep love for those close to him.
Howard’s commitment to service was exemplified through his honorable tenure in the United States Navy during the Korean War, where he served his country with distinction. Following his military service, he devoted 40 years of his career to Mission Hospital as the New Born Baby Photographer, capturing precious early moments of countless families' lives.
A long-time member of Starnes Cove Baptist Church since 1983, Howard’s faith remained a cornerstone of his existence. His love for the church, dancing, and western films painted the picture of a man who treasured simple joys and community bonds. Many fondly recall his spirited dancing at The Old Home Place, where his joyful presence lit up the room.
Howard is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Debbie Gantt Gay and her husband Travis; his son, Jim Alan Gantt; and his step-daughter, Barbara Dykes and her husband Rodney. He was a proud grandfather to Aspen Casey Morgan and her husband Josh, and Jacob Gantt. His step-grandchildren include Beth Pearson and her partner Tristian; Laura Correll and her husband David; and Kristen Caison and her husband David. Howard also delighted in his great-grandchildren, Maxine Grace Mauney and Leo Dwayne Clark, as well as eight step-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his later years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Clement Gantt and Hattie Lee Gantt; his first wife, Martha Maynard Gantt; his second wife, Betty Faye Looney Gantt; his son, Mark S. Gantt; and his step-daughter, Debbie Reese.
The family kindly requests that attendees of the memorial service wear blue and/or yellow, Howard’s favorite colors, as a tribute to his memory.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Starnes Cove Baptist Church, located at 149 Starnes Cove Road in Asheville, North Carolina. Following this, a memorial service will take place in the same location at 2:00 PM with Rev. Charlie Sams and Rev. William Moore officiating. A private burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Howard Glenn Gantt’s life was a testament to commitment—be it to his country, his career, his church, or his family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him, and his legacy of love, faith, and joy endures in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
