Howard Lee Pickrel, III, a dedicated and talented chef known for his culinary expertise and independent spirit, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 6, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina. Born on March 22, 1973, in Newark, Ohio, Howard devoted much of his life to the pursuit of excellence in the culinary arts, leaving a lasting impression on the community and those who knew him.
Howard earned a degree in Culinary Arts, a testament to his passion and commitment to the craft of cooking. Over the years, he built a commendable career as a chef, culminating in his role at The Scotsman Public House, an Irish pub located in Waynesville, North Carolina. There, he not only served as the head chef but also earned the unique honor of having a menu item named after him—a reflection of his skill, creativity, and the respect he garnered among his peers and patrons alike. In addition, Howard had the rare privilege of serving many prominent celebrities, to include President George W. Bush, comedian George Carlin, actor Erik Estrada, and many others.
Known for his independent nature, Howard approached life and work with determination and pride. His culinary talents, combined with his individuality, made him a memorable figure in the kitchens where he worked, and in the hearts of those who enjoyed his culinary creations.
Howard is survived by his loving parents, Howard Lee Pickrel, Jr. and Mari Alicia Huffman Pickrel; his brother, Christopher Alan Pickrel; and his uncle, George William Pickrel. These family members carry forward his legacy and memory. In addition, he was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Cinder.
A private service to celebrate Howard's life will be held in Newark, OH at a later date.
