Hubert Glenn Smith, affectionately known as "Poppy," went to see Jesus and his family in heaven on Friday, February 27, 2026, in Asheville at the age of 92.
Born on December 29, 1933, in Asheville, Hubert graduated from Emma High School before furthering his education at what is now known as AB Tech. His hardworking nature led him to a dedicated career with the Transportation Department for the City of Asheville, where he served from the mid-1970s until his retirement in 1999, accumulating more than 30 years of service.
A longtime member of Clayton Avenue Free Will Baptist Church, Hubert was cherished not only for his commitment to his faith but also for his compassionate spirit. He was a caring individual who exemplified love through his role as a caretaker for his late wife, parents, and Nanny, his mother-in-law. His personality shone through in his love for embroidery, traveling, walking along the beach, and fellowship at family get togethers. Hubert was truly a people person, always engaging with those around him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Martha Jean Norton Smith, who passed away on January 6, 2014; as well as his parents, Charles Bingham Smith and Lassie Lavada Martin Smith; his siblings: Jessie Wild, Mary Wild, and Harold Smith; and his beloved dogs, Dolly and Hobo.
Hubert was a devoted father to three children: Janet Lynn Ownbey, Pamela Kay Smith (Keith Stewart), and Terry Glenn Smith (Debbie). He took great pride in being a grandfather to Bryan Stewart (Laura), Stephanie Stewart McClellan (Shawn), Tommy Ownbey (Angela), Crystal Stephenson, and Kyle Smith. His legacy continues with his great-grandchildren: Kamron, Dylan, Jason, Griffin, Owen, Morgan, and Erin; as well as his great-great-grandchildren, Solomon and Brinley. Additionally, he was loved dearly by many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home in Asheville. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM the next day, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Bowman-Rector Cemetery in Marshall. The family will also receive friends at all other times at his daughter's home, 11 Wedgefield Place, Asheville, NC 28806.
Hubert Glenn Smith leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a legacy of kindness, compassion, and service that will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
