Jack Carl Buckner, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, in his beloved hometown. Born on December 18, 1938, in Buncombe County where he spent much of his life, Jack’s journey was marked by dedication, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
A proud graduate of Erwin High School’s class of 1957, Jack embarked on a notable career with Norfolk Southern Railroad. Serving with unwavering commitment for thirty-seven and a half years until his retirement on November 30, 2000, he reached the esteemed role of Locomotive Engineer. His colleagues and community remember him for his steadfast work ethic and dedication to his craft.
Jack found joy beyond his professional life in the outdoors, especially in farming. He cherished time spent working with tractors and raising cattle, activities that connected him to the land he loved. Additionally, he had a passion for shopping for and collecting antiques, a hobby that reflected his appreciation for history and craftsmanship.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Wilma Christine Brewer Buckner, who passed away on December 31, 2001; his parents, Ralph Lane Buckner and Hazel Brown Buckner; his brother Bobby L. Buckner; his sister, Betty Buckner Gallimore and her husband Jim; and nephews Jason Buckner and Tracy Gallimore. Their memories live on in the hearts of all who knew Jack.
Jack is lovingly remembered and survived by his sons, Jack Buckner, Jr., and wife Vickie, and Johnny Buckner and wife Lundy. He was a proud grandfather to Tabatha Buckner, Chris Kent, Dylan Henderson and wife Rebecca, Lauren Metcalf and husband Blake, Dawson Henderson, and London Henderson. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Eliza, Allie, Cooper, Wren, Solar, Saleh, Rosie, and Kennedy, who brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his brother, Tommy Buckner and wife Karen; as well as nieces and nephews: Dianne Buckner, Lane Buckner, Lynna Frye, Danny Rigsby, Cindy Capps, Tony Brewer, and Teresa Faulkner.
The family will gather to honor Jack’s memory with a visitation on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home, located at 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806. Pastor Chad Elledge will officiate the service with burial to follow at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jack Carl Buckner, Sr.’s life was a testament to dedication, family, and the enduring spirit of the outdoorsman. His contributions to his community and family leave a lasting impression that will be cherished for generations to come.
