Jack Edward Padgett, a beloved member of the Asheville community and a devoted firefighter, went home to be with The Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2026, just one day shy of his 74th birthday. Born on February 29, 1952, in Asheville, Jack lived a life marked by his unwavering dedication to both his faith and his family.
For 23 years, Jack served as a firefighter with the City of Asheville, a profession that mirrored his commitment to helping others and protecting his community. After retiring, he continued to leave an indelible mark on those around him, known for his warm personality and willingness to engage in meaningful conversations with everyone he met. Jack had a profound love for The Lord, always striving to glorify God in every aspect of his life. He was a steadfast member of Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church since 2009.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Phyllis Ross Padgett, whom he married on October 15, 1988. He also leaves behind his cherished siblings: Mack Padgett and his wife Carol, Charles Padgett and his wife Brenda, and Barbara Padgett Penland, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy of love and service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse McHenry Padgett and Margaret Louise Fortune Padgett; as well as his siblings: Maxine Thomas and her husband Carl, Kathryn Burns and her husband Robert, Mildred Worley, and Betty Thompson.
A memorial service to honor Jack's life will be held at Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, located at 281 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804, on Friday, March 6, 2026, starting at 3:00 PM with Rev. Sean McCann officiating. His family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service, and burial will take place at a later date at the Padgett Family Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join in remembrance of a remarkable man who touched the lives of so many.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's memory to Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, located at 281 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804.
