James “Gene” Eugene Messer, Jr., of Candler, passed away on September 13, 2026, in Candler, just days after his 73rd birthday. He was born on September 7, 1953, in Candler, and his life was deeply rooted in the community he called home.
Gene graduated from Enka High School with the Class of 1971 and went on to attend Western Carolina State University, where he studied forestry, a subject that remained a lifelong passion. He worked for many years with the Buncombe County School System, where he became supervisor of the Carpentry division before his retirement. His work reflected his steady commitment, skill, and dedication through the years.
Beyond his career, Gene was a man who loved his family and found joy in the simple and meaningful pleasures of life. He especially enjoyed riding motorcycles with his brother, Brian, and counted the Blue Ridge Parkway among his favorite places to ride. He also loved being outdoors and spending time fishing, finding peace and happiness in nature. Gene was a longtime member of Good News Baptist Church, where his faith was an important part of his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Regina Reece Messer, whom he married on December 31, 1993. He also leaves behind his brother, Brian Messer; his daughter, Kellan Partridge; his step-son, Ashley Parker and his wife Lindsay; and his step-daughter, Jennifer Baker. Gene’s memory will also be cherished by his grandchildren, Angela Baker, Ashton Baker, Autumn Baker, Avery Parker, and Grayson Parker. He is also survived by his nephew, Shawn Avery Messer and his wife, Amanda, and their daughter Avery Messer. May those who knew and loved Gene carry forward the warmth of his memory, the strength of his example, and the joy he found in family, faith, and the beauty of the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Eugene Messer, Sr. and Mary Christine Plemmons Messer; and his step son-in-law, Donnie Baker.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation which will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 12:00 until 12:45 p.m. at Good News Baptist Church, 1953 Smokey Park Highway, Candler, NC 28715.
