James Ralph Penland

James Ralph "JR" Penland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in Fairview, at the age of 75. Born on May 7, 1950, in Henderson County, James was a proud graduate of TC Roberson High School, class of 1969. He was known for his unwavering selflessness and dedication to others, often putting their needs ahead of his own.

JR served his country as a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, embodying the values of courage, honor, and commitment. His military service was a vital part of his identity, and he carried the pride of being a Marine throughout his life.

A man of many passions, JR had a deep love for NASCAR and was particularly fond of Dale Earnhardt. He enjoyed leisurely moments spent watching classic television shows such as The Andy Griffith Show and The Beverly Hillbillies, as well as indulging in Cowboy and Western movies. His zest for life extended to his cherished Chevrolet Camaro, a symbol of his youthful spirit.

Above all, James cherished his family. He is survived by his two sons, Travis Penland and wife Jennifer, and John Penland and wife Jennifer. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Sydnee and husband Travis, Jacob, Hannah and husband Hunter, and James and wife Amber; along with his great-grandchildren, Everleigh and Hudson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Margaret Thomas, and Walter Penland and wife Joy; as well as a sister-in-law, Mary Penland. JR took great joy in his relationships with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

JR was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Edward Penland and Jane Arsula Pressley Penland; and siblings: John Penland, Dixie Franks and husband Gene, Mary Frances Ray and husband Michael, Ann Ledford, and Mack Penland; along with a brother-in-law, Lon Thomas.

His memory will be honored at the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home in Asheville, North Carolina. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM, followed by a funeral service starting at 1:00 PM. Pastor Todd Royal will officiate and burial will follow at the Penland Family Cemetery on School Road, with Military Honors provided by the US Marine Corps.

James Ralph Penland will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His spirit lives on in the memories shared by family and friends, and his legacy of love and kindness will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
