Jo Ann Ray Crompton, born on September 19, 1948, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 17, 2026, in her hometown. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished aunt, and respected member of her community, remembered for her warmth, dedication, and spirited love of life.

Jo Ann’s early years were rooted in Buncombe County, where she attended Erwin High School, graduating with pride. Her pursuit of education continued at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, where she earned a degree in office administration. This foundational achievement became a stepping stone for her impressive career, during which she dedicated over 30 years to AB Tech. Her roles as secretary and office administrator marked a professional life defined by commitment, expertise, and a quiet strength that supported her colleagues and the institution alike.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jo Ann was a woman of varied passions. She loved to read, often immersing herself in books that broadened her horizons and fueled her curiosity. Travel was another joy, providing her with opportunities to explore new places and cultures, enriching her life and the stories she shared with those around her. A long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi, she took pride in her connections and contributions to this sisterhood, which reflected her values of friendship, growth, and service.

Jo Ann’s character was further revealed through her role within her family. She was the beloved wife of 54 years to Jimmy Arthur Crompton, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories and unwavering partnership. Together, they raised two sons, Tracy Lane Crompton and Kevin Mark Crompton—Kevin sharing his life with his wife Mandy—forming a close-knit family that Jo Ann treasured deeply. Her affection extended to her nieces and nephew, Patricia Swilling and husband Mike, Marcy Allen and husband Blake, and Aaron Surrett, who was like a son to her. The presence of many great nieces and nephews and an extended family network underscored the large circle of loved ones she held dear. Jo Ann’s home was also graced by the companionship of her beloved cat, Levi, who brought joy to her daily life.

While Jo Ann’s life was marked by cherished relationships, she also endured the sorrow of loss. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaither Decatur Ray and Queenie Victoria Luticia Tomberlin Ray; her sister, Emurytrude “Trudy” Surrett; and her nieces: Jamie Surrett, Trudy Ann Surrett, and Darlene McConnellouge, all of whom remain lovingly remembered.

A celebration of Jo Ann’s life will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the family home, located at 75 Hillcrest Ct, Leicester, North Carolina. This gathering will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and all who knew her to honor her memory, share stories, and offer support one another in the midst of loss.
