JoAnne Brown Shelton, a lifelong resident of Asheville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2026. Born on September 27, 1948, in Asheville, JoAnne lived a life marked by kindness, warmth, and an unwavering devotion to her family and community.
Throughout her life, JoAnne was known for her remarkable ability to connect with others. She never met a stranger and was truly a friend to everyone she encountered. Her welcoming spirit and genuine interest in people left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
JoAnne’s days were enriched by her love of nature and quiet pleasures. She enjoyed reading and found joy in watching the birds and squirrels alongside her husband. Hummingbirds and cardinals held a special place in her heart, symbolizing the simple beauties she cherished. Her compassion extended beyond people to the many animals she cared for, a testament to her nurturing soul.
A longtime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, JoAnne found faith and fellowship that sustained her throughout her life.
JoAnne is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Earl James Shelton; her daughters: Laura Ann Shelton Holland and husband Anthony, and Jamie Lynn Shelton Ketterman; her grandchildren: Jessie Holland and wife Ashelee, Tressa Pierce and husband Robbie, Victoria Davis and husband Colby, Jasmine Quinn and husband Alex, and Stephen Ketterman; and her great-grandchildren: Logan Holland, Spencer Holland, Miles Quinn, Maddox Quinn, and Riley Pierce. She also leaves behind her sister, Nancy Davis; her brother-in-law, Gregg Doe:; and many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James William Brown and Lois May Miller Brown; her son, Thomas Wesley Shelton, II; and her sister, Jane Doe.
A graveside service will be held to honor JoAnne’s life on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Green Hills Cemetery, located at 25 New Leicester Highway in Asheville, NC 28806.
JoAnne Brown Shelton’s legacy is one of love, friendship, and gentle kindness. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know her.
