Joe Edward Wilkison, born on September 6, 1944, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Joe’s early years began in New Castle, and his journey led him to Taylor, Michigan, where he graduated from Taylor High School. Shortly after, he was called to serve his country during a time of great challenge. Joe honorably served in the US Army during the Vietnam War as a proud member of the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles. His commitment and bravery were evident as he first undertook the role of radio operator and later protected a CIA camp alongside his division. While serving, Joe was wounded in combat and for his valor and sacrifice, he received both the Purple Heart Award and the Bronze Star Award with a V device, recognitions that profoundly reflect his courage and dedication.

After his military service, Joe built a life grounded in hard work and steadfast character. He dedicated many years to Ingles store #62 on New Leicester Highway, where he became an admired manager before retiring in 2007. Colleagues and customers alike valued Joe’s leadership, sense of responsibility, and unwavering work ethic.

He is survived by Terri Butler Wilkison; his son, Brooks Joseph Wilkison and Teresa; his daughter, Rebecca Wilkison Holloway and Corey; grandchildren: Dawson, Ariana, Autumn, and Phoenix; his grand-dog, Moses; his "daughter-out-law", Tara Jones-Clark; and his treasured long-time friend, Jerry Jones, who brought many great conversations and companionship into his life. He is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

Though Joe’s journey is now complete, he is reunited with loved ones who preceded him in death: his parents, Richard Akin Wilkison and Betty Jean Swogger Wilkison; and his daughter, Sarah Jean Wilkison.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Charles George VA Medical Center Hospice Valor Wing for the exceptional care and comfort provided to Joe and his family during his final days.

Joe Edward Wilkison’s legacy is one of strength and honor—a life rich with service and devotion. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation Center is honored to serve Joe's family.
