John Aleksey Semma, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina. Born on July 29, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, John lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and a generous spirit.
John’s journey took him from his birthplace in Baltimore to Florida, Detroit, back to Florida, and ultimately to the serene mountains of Western North Carolina, where he made his home for the past eight years. Throughout his life, he cultivated a deep love of nature. Whether swimming, scuba diving, camping, hiking, or simply watching manatees glide gracefully through the water, John found joy and solace in the outdoors. These passions reflected a genuine appreciation for life’s simple pleasures and the natural world’s beauty.
Academically accomplished, John earned a Master’s degree in Physical Therapy, which launched him into a lifelong career dedicated to healing and helping others. His work spanned many hospitals, nursing homes, and private offices, where he played an instrumental role in assisting individuals to recover and enjoy better, healthier lives. Colleagues and patients alike remembered him for his unwavering commitment and compassionate approach. John served faithfully in his profession until his retirement, proud of the positive impact he made in the lives of so many.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man of warmth and humor. Known affectionately as a “goofball,” he delighted in making others laugh and lifted spirits with his playful nature. He was also known for his generosity, always ready to give of himself to support those around him. A testament to his strength and character, John was a double kidney transplant survivor, a journey that underscored his resilience and hope.
John is survived by his beloved son, Bradley Semma and his wife Dawn; brother-in-law, Robert Shortall; and many extended family members and friends who will carry forward his memory with love and respect. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Semma and Helen Malsew Semma; and his sister, Sandra Shortall.
Throughout his life, John Aleksey Semma touched many hearts with kindness, laughter, and unwavering dedication—to family, profession, and the natural world he so dearly loved. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will endure as a beacon of compassion and joy. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
