Born on February 23, 1953, in Asheville, Karen lived a life marked by dedicated service to others, both in her career and personal pursuits, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Karen completed her education locally, graduating from North Buncombe High School in 1971 before earning her Registered Nurse degree from Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing in 1976. She devoted many years to nursing, working as a nursing supervisor at several area nursing homes until her retirement in 1995. In addition to her supervisory roles, she contributed part-time efforts administering flu shots for Maxim Healthcare and served as an election official for the Buncombe County Board of Elections, demonstrating a commitment to community involvement.

Her professional dedication extended beyond direct patient care. Karen was proud to serve on the Board of Directors of the Western North Carolina Kidney Foundation in the early 1970s. She held leadership roles such as President of the Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association from 1979 to 1980, and continued active membership within the association. Further reflecting her deep commitment to community safety and welfare, she served on the Board of Directors of the French Broad Fire Department and was Vice President of the organization. During the mid-1980s to early 1990s, Karen was also a member of the Pilot Club of Asheville. Her generosity of time and spirit was evident through her volunteer work as a tutor for the Reading Partners Program at Weaverville Elementary School, where she helped children develop their reading skills. Since 1998, she faithfully volunteered at the Carepartners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville, offering comfort to patients and families, and thoughtful gestures for the staff.

A woman of faith, Karen was a born-again Christian and devoted member of Newbridge Baptist Church. Her spirituality was a guiding force throughout her life and shaped her deep compassion for those around her.

Karen's talents extended beyond healthcare and volunteerism into the written word. Writing was one of her cherished hobbies, and her work was featured in publications such as Home Life, Christian Single, and Spirit magazines. She was a contributing author to several anthologies including "Hometown Memories... Memorable Tales of the Smokies and Blue Ridge Mountains," "Old Buncombe County Heritage - N.C., Vol. II," "Making Great Gingerbread Houses," and "Windows to the Past: The International Library of Photography." Moreover, she authored two books: "A Glimpse Beyond," and a children’s book centered on disabilities titled "Special People Are Just Like You," reflecting her passion for sharing stories that inspire understanding and kindness.
