Leander "Lee" Arnold, a man of many talents and a vibrant spirit, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at his home in Fairview. He was born on April 10, 1961, in Asheville. Lee's life was a testament to living fully and passionately; he embraced every moment and cherished his family above all else. Of all the titles he held, perhaps his favorite was 'Poppy.'

In recent years, Lee found a new and profound source of happiness in his grandson, Maverick. He spent the last four years proudly answering to the name 'Poppy,' a role he cherished above all others. Spending time with Maverick brought an immense joy to Lee’s life; he viewed his grandson as his greatest gift—a final, beautiful blessing in a life already filled with love.

A graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School, Lee possessed a boundless enthusiasm for life that was reflected in his love for activities such as the Scottish Games, a tradition he held dear, as he often expressed his love for the Scottish culture he embraced as his own. Known for his warmth and humor, he formed many great friendships that enriched his life and the lives of others.

Lee is survived by his loving and devoted lifelong partner, Mandi Bates, and his daughter, Alison Arnold (Preston). He was a proud stepfather to Rebekah Blackwell (Patrick), and Jesse Blackwell, as well as a cherished grandfather to Carter Sharpe and a loving Poppy to Maverick Reagan. His family also includes his sister, Debbie Arnold (Mark Kirkpatrick), and beloved nieces and nephews: Laurie Harris (Morgan), Jeremiah Mondello (Crickett), Harvest Mondello (Kristen), and Sarah Mondello.

Though Lee's parents, Horace Leander Arnold and Delores Dorothy Lopez Arnold, along with his sister, Amy Arnold, have passed away, their presence continues to be felt through the love and memories they shared.

A service to celebrate Lee's life will be held at a later date.

As we remember Lee, we honor a remarkable individual who brought joy and a sense of community to all who knew him. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will carry fond memories of his laughter and zest for life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Asheville Humane Society, 14 Forever Friend Lane, Asheville, NC 28806 or online at ashevillehumane.org

Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation Center is honored to serve Lee's family.
