Marnie Hatter passed away at her home in Asheville, North Carolina on Sunday, April 12, 2026. She was 54 years old. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Margaret Duffy Hatter and the late Bruce D. Hatter. As a child Marnie spent many happy years in Flint, Michigan and later in Denver, Colorado before moving to Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1980. Marnie moved to western North Carolina as a young adult where she attended college locally and became an accomplished soccer player and skier. A life-long lover of animals, she followed her dreams of becoming a dog trainer by graduating from the West Virginia Canine College in 1997. She then started her own successful dog training business where she guided many Asheville dog-owners in the care and training of their canine pets. Marnie had a special gift for connecting with dogs and cats, and loved many of her own over the years.
Marnie was most at home in the clear skies, gentle mountains, and cool temperatures of western North Carolina. It was there that she built a close-knit community of friends and family who shared her love for afternoons on the lake and evenings around the fire pit. Fiercely loyal, Marnie was always there for her friends and family when they needed her. With strength and compassion, she dedicated many years to the care of her mother during her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Marnie wasn’t afraid of much and you were lucky to have her in your corner when the going got tough.
Marnie is survived by her siblings, Beth Oniskey and her husband, Rick Oniskey, of Flourtown, PA, Michael Hatter of Phoenix, AZ, and Kevin Swider and his wife, Jamie Swider, of Cornelius, NC, her nieces Carly and Ella Oniskey and Logan and Morgan Swider, a multitude of much-loved cousins, and many very dear friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Van Dong Hatter.
True to form Marnie did not want a funeral or celebration of life, instead preferring her family and friends remember her in their own private way. As we want to honor Marnie’s wishes, there will be no formal service of remembrance.
Memorial contributions in Marnie’s name may be made to: Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 8195, Asheville, NC 28814
