Asheville

Mary Jemison Fenna, born on January 19, 1950, in Tokyo, Japan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina.

As a child born into a military family, Mary’s childhood took her from Tokyo, back home to Oklahoma and later to Pennsylvania, where she completed her high school education at McCuskey High School in Lancaster. Demonstrating a lifelong commitment to learning and service, she earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Temple University. She further honed her expertise by attending Medical Technology School, qualifying as a Medical Technologist—and working in a hospital. Her career later advanced when she became a Research Associate at the University of Miami, where she contributed significantly to the field of medical research in the University’s Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department.

Mary's character was defined by courage, boldness, artistic expression and a strong sense of community. In her earlier years, she embraced an adventurous lifestyle, pursuing hobbies such as scuba diving, learning judo and acquiring her private pilot license, an achievement of which she was particularly proud. True to Mary’s nature, she didn’t just fly, she did barrel rolls in the sky. Beyond her adventurous pursuits, Mary was gifted artistically, with talents in painting and particularly photography. She also devoted time fostering community spirit through her role as a Girl Scout Troop Leader for over ten years, a perennial school volunteer and a firm believer in giving back to those in need. She was especially close to the congregation at Plymouth Congregational Church in Miami, Florida, where she sang in the choir for many years.

Mary took pride in her family and a keen interest in her family history (which can be traced back to “Lost Billie” in North Carolina, predating the American Revolution) and connecting with her far-flung relatives. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Elaine Victoria Fenna and Ian James Edward Fenna; and her sisters, Susanne C. Jemison, and Jacqueline "Jackie" Ricketts. Her legacy also lives on through many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and all of the Girl Scouts that gathered around her kitchen table over the years.

Mary was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Jack D. Pigford; her mother, Jeanne P. Leman; her step-father, Dr. James M. Leman; and her sister, Georgeanna “Georgie” Corl.

The family are holding a private memorial to celebrate Mary's life in June.
