Mary Mathes

Candler – Mary Mathes, 86, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at the Carepartners Solace Center.

A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Stephen Wilson Rice and Golen Pearle Biddix Rice. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Aaron Mathes; brother, Stephen Lonnie Rice, and sister, Louise Rice.

Surviving are her children: Darlene Myers, Johnny William Mathes and wife Karen, and Joyce Mathes Freeman and husband Eddie; grandchildren: Johnny William Mathes, Jr., William Eugene Myers, Adam Nathaniel Farmer, and Joshua Adam Freeman; eleven great-grandchildren; great-great-granddaughter, Milani; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1 till 2:30 PM Monday, November 13, 2023, at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at Elk Mountain Cemetery.
