Dr. Michael J. Flanagan, Jr., a devoted educator, passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Advent Health Hendersonville. He was born on March 4, 1941, in Fall River, Massachusetts, and would go on to lead a life filled with teaching, learning, and sharing joy with those around him.
A long-time student and educator, Michael dedicated his professional career to teaching English as a second language at various colleges. He ultimately retired from Amherst College, where he influenced countless students. Even in retirement, Michael's commitment to education did not wane; he continued to teach English at several area prisons in Western North Carolina, reflecting his dedication to outreach and support for those seeking improvement in their circumstances.
His educational journey was marked by notable achievements, including a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a master’s degree from the University of Alabama, and another master’s degree along with his doctorate from Boston University. Michael's thirst for knowledge set a remarkable example for his students and peers alike.
After retiring, Michael settled in the picturesque mountains of Western North Carolina, where he spent many years cultivating his love for the outdoors. He took great pleasure in gardening and adorning his home with vibrant flowers, bringing beauty to his surroundings. Michael also cherished the time spent with friends, often gathering to play various musical instruments and create beautiful music together. His love for creativity and connection was evident in all aspects of his life.
Michael is survived by his beloved sister, Maureen Murphy, as well as his cherished nieces and nephew: Kerri Murphy, Patrick Murphy, and Trisha Murphy. He will be remembered fondly by his great-nieces and nephews: Katie Murphy, Abby Murphy, Shealyn Murphy, Julie Murphy, and Brynn Murphy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael J. Flanagan, Sr. and Evelyn Malonson Flanagan, and his beloved great-nephew, Semaus Murphy.
No services are planned.
Dr. Michael J. Flanagan, Jr. will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of teaching, kindness, and creativity will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.
