Michael Vernon Lee, born November 21, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was 83 years old.
Michael’s early life was shaped by his upbringing in Maryland, and he was a proud graduate of Arundel High School in Gambrills, MD. Shortly after graduating, Michael answered the call to serve his country. He served honorably in the United States Navy, embodying a deep sense of duty and commitment that would guide him throughout his life.
After completing his military service, Michael built a lasting career at Gerber Manufacturing in Asheville, where his dedication and reliability made a difference for many years. His work ethic and quiet resolve earned the respect of his colleagues and contributed meaningfully to his community.
Michael is survived by his son, Michael Ecks; daughter, Tammy Warren and her husband Greg; step-daughter, Shelia Howard and her husband Danny; step-son, Kenny Deitz and his wife Vickie; along with many grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, William Lee Hunter and Vivian Edith Upton.
A man of faith, Michael was a former member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. In retirement, he found peace and joy in the simple pleasures of daily life. He could often be found in the Asheville City Parks, walking or riding his bicycle, or sharing songs at local karaoke gatherings—especially when performing Elvis music, which he dearly loved. Though a private person, Michael enjoyed collecting many things, each item a quiet testament to his lifelong curiosity and appreciation for life’s unique treasures.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 PM on Monday, August 31, 2026 at Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home and Cremation Center. The family will receive friends immediately following the service until 5 PM at the funeral home. All who knew and cared for Michael are welcome to join in remembrance and celebration of his life.
