Mildred M. Sams, 90, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 25, 2026, in Asheville.
Born July 9, 1935, in Swain County, Mildred made Buncombe County her home for the majority of her years, where she wove herself deeply into the fabric of her community. At just fourteen, Mildred became a long-time and faithful member of Bigham Heights Baptist Church, a testament to a life grounded in faith and service.
A woman of remarkable dedication, Mildred devoted thirty-two years of her life to the noble profession of nursing. As the nurse supervisor of the operating room at St. Joseph Hospital, she touched countless lives not only through her skill but also her gentleness and empathy. Her expertise and leadership left an indelible mark on those she worked with and cared for. A proud member of the Association of Operating Room Nurses (A.O.R.N.), Mildred served as a role model for her colleagues and was held in the highest esteem by all who had the privilege to work alongside her.
Outside her distinguished career, Mildred cherished her connection with the Red Hat Ladies Society, where her vibrant spirit and sense of camaraderie flourished among her friends. Her life was further enriched by her devotion to her family, who will forever remember her warm presence, sage advice, and unconditional love.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janet Riggs and husband Cort, and Diane Clay and husband Bryan, who remain inspired by their mother’s example of steadfast love and fortitude. Mildred’s legacy also lives on through her grandchildren: Tonya Ingle and husband Mark, Elizabeth Driver and husband Matt, Rebekah Wolfrath, Silver Clay, and Sheflon Clay; her great-grandchildren: Jacob Ingle, Joshua Ingle, Jared Ingle, Raelynn Driver, James Driver, Harper Wolfrath, and Tony Wolfrath; as well as her great-great-grandson, Axel Conner Ingle.
Mildred reunites in eternal peace with her beloved husband, Ernest Sams; her daughter, Teresa Russell; her sister, Lucille Solesby; her brothers: Cecil Ray Ball, Leonard Lee Ball, and Percival Ray Ball; and her parents, David Ball and Fairrie Elizabeth LeQuire Ball. Each of them shared a treasured part in her life’s journey.
Family and friends will gather to honor Mildred’s life at a graveside service on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. The service will be held at Locust Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, located at 305 Locust Grove Road, Weaverville, NC 28787, with Pastor Bobby Smith officiating.
