Ralph William Bonham, Sr., a dedicated and hard-working individual, went home to be with The Lord peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Hendersonville, surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on January 5, 1947, in Buncombe County, and throughout his life, he epitomized the values of honesty, care, and diligent work.
Ralph’s career was marked by commitment and perseverance. He initially worked for Ingles, before moving to the Asheville Water Department, followed by his tenure at Continental Teeves. He concluded his working journey at the Flint Group, where he retired in 2012. In addition to his full-time roles, Ralph demonstrated an extraordinary work ethic by serving as a custodian at Enka High School for over 50 years, putting in an additional four hours each evening.
A proud veteran, Ralph served in the United States Army from 1969 until 1971 during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of SP4. His service earned him several commendations, including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with the 1960 Device, the Army Commendation Medal, two Overseas Bars, and marksman and sharpshooter distinctions on the M-14 and M-16 rifles, respectively.
Ralph’s commitment extended beyond his professional life; he was a longstanding member of Leicester Baptist Church, which held a special place in his heart. His contributions and dedication to his faith community will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.
Ralph leaves behind his loving family: his daughter, Anne Haring, and her husband Christian; his son, Ralph Bonham, Jr., and his wife Stefanie; and his cherished grandchildren: Loretta Haney and her husband Josh, Michael Thomason and his partner Kayla, Matthew Edwards and wife Michaela, and Melinda Edwards. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Andrew Jacob Thomason Cameron Haney, Kaylee Jenkins, Junior Jenkins, Madelynn Jenkins, Roman Edwards, and Evelyn Edwards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas William Bonham and Ruth Carter Bonham; his wife, Madeline Walker Bonham, who passed away on October 7, 2014; and his brother, Charles "Tom" Bonham.
Ralph William Bonham, Sr. will be remembered as a pillar of strength and kindness, whose life was a testament to hard work and the love of family. His spirit and values will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will take place on Friday, January 30, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, both at Leicester Baptist Church located at 18 Tony Lunsford Dr, Leicester, NC 28748. Pastor Chad Elledge will officiate. His burial will follow at the church cemetery with military honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard.
