Shirley Taffer Robertson, a beloved mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 30, 2026, at her home in Woodfin while surrounded by her family. Born on July 28, 1935, in Buncombe County, Shirley’s life was marked by her profound love for family and her generous spirit.
Shirley was known for her fierce devotion to her loved ones, finding her greatest joy when surrounded by family. She delighted in preparing wonderful meals that brought everyone together, creating lasting memories around the table. A passionate gardener, she eagerly anticipated spring each year, tending to her flowers and garden with care as long as she was able. Her weekends were often spent on lake trips, where she enjoyed fishing and cooking out, savoring the simple pleasures of time shared with family and friends.
Throughout her life, Shirley was supported and cherished by many. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Joyce Reese and her husband James, and James Taffer, Jr. Her legacy continues through her extensive family, including nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Ruth Moore; step-daughter, Angela Robertson and her companion Roger; brother-in-law, Larry Robertson and his wife Ginger; step-daughter-in-law,Brenda Robertson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Dock Ingle and Mary Wright Ingle; her beloved first husband of 38 years, Reverend James Taffer, who was the father of her children; her daughters, Patricia Flynn and Regina Ponder; grandson, James Whit; sisters, Martha Gosnell and Margaret Ingle; brother, Jack Ingle; her second love and husband of 26 years, Lonnie Robertson; and step-son Michael Robertson.
The community will gather to honor Shirley’s memory on Thursday, April 2, 2026, beginning with a visitation in the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home, located at 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Following this, a graveside service will be held at New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, 625 Olivette Road, Asheville, NC 28804, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Richie Honeycutt will officiate and music will be by Gary Hensley and J.H. Fender.
Pallbearers will be James Reese, Ronnie Lunsford, Joe Gosnell, Junior Moore, Zach Ridenhour, and Adam Ponder.
Shirley Taffer Robertson’s life was a testament to love, warmth, and the joy of family unity. Her gentle spirit and unwavering kindness touched all who knew her, leaving an enduring imprint on the hearts of her family and community. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.
