Stephen Edward Calloway, a beloved member of the Asheville community and dedicated business owner, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on November 13, 1949, in Asheville, Stephen was the son of Harold Edward Calloway and Juanita Gertrude Austin Calloway.

For more than 30 years, Stephen passionately operated Tarmatt Asphalt, Inc. in Asheville, where his commitment to quality service and integrity earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and clients. Stephen was known for his generosity, often extending help to those in need. His passion for hot rods, racing, and all things automotive showcased a vibrant personality that endeared him to many.

Stephen proudly served in the United States Army, a testament to his dedication and sense of duty. His military service was a significant part of his life and a role he held with honor and pride.

Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Harold Edward Calloway and Juanita Gertrude Austin Calloway; and by his sister, Linda Jones, and brother, David Calloway.

Stephen is survived by his children: Stefanie Calloway, Jason Calloway, Van Calloway, Josuua Calloway and his wife Amanda, and Jonathan Calloway and his wife Emily. He shared a deep bond with their loving mother, Martha Calloway, who remained dedicated to him and their family throughout the years. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Kayla Paige Calloway, Blake Judson Calloway, Elizabeth Erianna Hope Smart and her husband Chad, and Valerie Faith Connor. Stephen was also a proud great-grandfather to Weston Connor Scott, Sutton Elizabeth Smart, Ariana Bella Grace Scott, Charles "Trip" Randolph Smart, III, Lakelyn Lilliana Faith Scott, Italy Pickens, and Amara Pickens.

Additionally, he is survived by his siblings, including his sister, Pamela Cordell and her husband John, and brother, Daniel Calloway and his wife Linda. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law, Lynn Calloway, and brother-in-law, Roy Lee Jones. Stephen cherished many nieces, nephews, and extended family members, all of whom will miss his generous spirit and warm presence.

Stephen's family and friends invite those who knew him to celebrate his life. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:45 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Anders Rice & Roper Funeral Home, located at 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to Four Seasons Hospice and all those who helped over Stephen's final days, especially his nurse Kierah, for all the loving care and support given to both him and his family.
