Steven "Steve" Lee Verner passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, in Asheville, North Carolina. Born on May 15, 1954, in Memphis, Tennessee, Steve’s life was marked by a deep dedication to both his family and his passions.
A proud graduate of Gadsden High School in Gadsden, Alabama, class of 1973, Steve embraced a lifelong love for sports, with a particular affection for college softball. His appreciation for the game brought enjoyment not only to himself but also to those around him who shared in his excitement. Beyond his sporting interests, Steve was skilled in woodworking, a hobby through which he expressed creativity and craftsmanship, leaving behind tangible reminders of his patience and attention to detail.
Steve's personal life was rich with love and companionship. On June 2, 1973, shortly after his high school graduation, he married Rena Blackwood Verner. Their enduring partnership was a cornerstone of his life. Together, they raised two daughters, Amanda Verner Davis and her husband Wade, and Bethany Verner Barnes and her husband Eugene. Steve found immense joy in his role as a grandfather, cherishing moments with Thomas Hamilton Davis and Aelin Jericca Barnes. His bond with family extended warmly to his sister, Judy Knighten and her husband Bill, and his brother, Bob Verner and his wife Marilyn, along with several nieces and nephews who all held him in great esteem.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Hamilton Tarpley "HT" Verner, Jr. and Essie Lee Cauley Verner, whose memories he treasured. He also deeply mourned the loss of his granddaughter, Aspen Jade “AJ” Wyatt.
Throughout his life, Steven "Steve" Lee Verner embodied qualities of kindness, passion, and resilience. His contributions to the lives of his family and the joy he found in his interests will long be remembered by all who knew him. He leaves a lasting legacy of love and dedication that will continue to inspire. His family and friends celebrate his life and mourn his passing with heartfelt respect and gratitude for the time they shared.
